“Oppathinoppam”- Empowering Dalits and Adivasis.
Nilambur has sustained its beater by conserving a vast forest area and many plantations; however the inhabitants had not been exposed to the developments, that many land worlds aspire. This program has helped to showcase the knowledge and empowerment to strata of people who found it difficult to participate and be one among a civilized community.
The realization of and determination to bring the Dalits and Adivasis on par with the mainstream community pawed way to introspect and investigate. The result were that they had to be reached on several ground, from Education, Health, Sanitation, Homes even Nutrition. The Nilambur Grama Panchayath presented an action plan to get this program rolling to several agencies. Without a blink of the eye agencies such as NRHM, Mahila Samakhya, Government Departments like Department of Health, Department of the Development of Scheduled Casts and Tribes, Department of Police, ERISC, Department of Forests, Department of Agriculture, South Malabar Gramin Bank, Teachers, Politicians and other Organizations have constructed appreciable support in implementing this unique Social Intervention Program.
This sector of our Society has been given ample encouragement and support for children to be educated. Students with different abilities have been recognized. Facilitators and Teachers have been specially trained to provide the support system to students. A number of resource centre have been put in place to have maximum impact.
Houses have been built for the homeless and sanitation being a priority, the people is education on this and its effects on health.
Labor is generated for the elders to engage in and a minimum wage implemented. This not only gives them the earning power but enhances their ability to be involved in structural development therefore bringing about on awareness of the need to be developed.
On the Cultural front, the sector of the Society treasures a lot many talents opportunities are provided for them to showcase their talents which are a tourist attraction.
Medical Camps are conducted to not only assess their medical needs but to provide expert medical attention as well as medication is provided free of cost.
‘Oppathinoppam’ is a unique social intervention program by the Nilambur Grama Panchayath and later carried on by Nilambur Municipality both under the leader ship of Mr.Aryadan Shoukath implemented with the support and contribution from the people cutting across political, social and religious barriers. This units people of Nilambur and their thoughts.
