“Ayiram Veedu” (1000 Houses – Shelter for the Homeless)
In a country whose people take pride in the land of their birth, it is unfortunate that many are homeless on the same land they treasure. The initial steps to progress should be to provide shelter to those deprived.
This is precisely what The Nilambur Grama Panchayath envisaged. The results of the survey conducted for ‘Jyothirgamaya’ showed that nearly 1000 families did not have proper housing due to financial constraints. Although The Grama Panchayath had resources, these were very limited to provide funding for 1000 houses as an immediate necessity.
The ability, dedication and unity of the people to work towards a common goal had already been proven by the success of the ‘Jyothirgamaya’ project and this gave the Nilambur Grama Panchayath leadership, Mr.Aryadan Shoukath immense courage to set forth on an Innovative project which was the ‘Ayiram Veedu’ project.
It is at this junction that The Nilambur Grama Panchayath chalked out a plan and with the help of people from different at first once this awareness was spread was in place for the resource collection every household contributed and soon humble individual contributed an appreciable sum. Banks offered an easily repayable scheme. Once they have the resources it was time to sketch a building plan. Seven plans of the houses with 400 sqft area were presented to choose from.
The work open the construction began and during the period 2007-2008, 322 houses were constructed. It has been an humble effort on the part of the Nilambur Grama Panchayath administration to provide shelter to every person who owed a piece of land in the Nilambur Grama Panchayath through the ‘ Ayiram Veedu ‘ Scheme.
The Kerala State Government’s interventions and support in such projects and involvement by the community in welfare and developmental projects have given much hope to Nilambur Grama Panchayath to further bring about change for the people, by the people and to the people.
