Nilambur is a Municipality in the Malappuram District of Northern Kerala, about 40 kms inland from Malappuram. Most of the town’s residents are engaged in various business practice and the surrounding villages are occupied by farmers, who grow Rubber, Rice, Pepper, Coconut, Arachnut etc. The Nilambur town is close to the Chaliyar River and is famous for having the oldest Teak Plantation in the world. It is also home to wildlife in its vast forests. It is situated near the Western Ghats and within 100 kms of the popular hill station Ooty.
Nilambur forests is home to an ancient tribal settlement the ‘ Cholanaikkans’, one of the premature tribes in South India, the last remaining Hunter Gatherer Tribes seen in Karulai and Chungathara forest ranges near Nilambur. Legends say that every year the tribes come to pay homage to the Royal family of Nilambur Kovilakom. It is during the period of the tribal visit during the first weeks of January that Nilambur Valiyakalam Pattu is celebrated.
The festival begins with various offering to the god Vettakoru Magan, thereafter many tradition folk performances are showcase. It is tradition that during the first 7 days the Kovilakom the home to the Royal family of Nilambur, provide and celebrate feast to anyone visiting the Vettakoru Magan Temple or Kovilakom. The Tribe who visit the Kovilakom are not only fed but allowed to pack home a generous amount of food.
However, since 2005, Nilambur Pattulsavam went big. The Nilambur Municipality under the leadership of Mr.Aryadan Shoukath co-ordinate with the Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithi , Taxi Drivers Union and Nilambur Marchants Association to make this is a Mega Event and Today, the Cultural Events begins with a weeklong Nilambur Balan Memortial Drama Festival, Nilambur Balan known for his use of Drama to revolutionaries society during a period when Drama was an art. Followed up various performances by renowned artists on a huge stage which enables lakhs of people barring any cast religion or creed to go and enjoy the stage performances. It has become a festival of celebration, entertainment and fun. The Kerala Tourism Department evaluated this event and realizes its prominence for Tourism development in Kerala and as now acknowledged Nilambur Pattulsav and Tourism Festival as one the Tourism Festivals of Kerala.
This festival also called Nilambur Valiyakalam Pattu has now become a mega event called Nilambur Pattulsav and Tourism Festival. Every year the people in and around Nilambur celebrated and enjoy various stage performances, Amusement Rides and Shopping during Nilambur Pattulsav.
