A comprehensive Educational Program
Nilambur the land of Teak known for its thick green forests is situated on the banks of the Chaliyar River. I t is in the Malappuram District of Kerala state having a diverse section of population.
Several surveys revealed that a vast student’s populations passing out of Govt. schools were not complete enough to acquire well paid jobs. Most of the youngsters aspire to go abroad in seek of jobs. Their competency in English communication was poor. This revelation leads to a detailed survey of the conditions of students in many aspects of their life.
The result lead to a new innovative project called “Sadgamaya” formulated by the Nilambur Municipality Chairman Mr. Aryadan Shoukathand supported by his team. Initially the project was formulated such that the students are given a support system to enhance their Soft Skills such as English Communication, Basic Computer Skill and Yoga to strengthen their mental health become more confident to face the world.
The project was supported and approved by the Educational Department of Kerala and has been implemented as a pilot project for the students of Govt. Manavedan Vocational Higher Secondary School, Nilambur since 2011. A team of facilitators were appointed and an hour’s coaching provided just before the regular school hours began. The syllabus for the training was provided by the State Bodies. Various state institutions such as State Institute of English, Kerala IT Mission and Calicut University extended their support to get this project implemented.
The highlight of the project was that individuals from the UK and USA were appointed and sponsored for 4 months during an academic year. The Children had an added advantage to interact with Native English Speakers their by understanding various accents, understanding other cultures and also were getting acquainted to different informal teaching methods. This not only improved their language but also the students become more confident.
On completion of one year of this project, observers recognized considerable improvement and approved of extension of this project to the next academic year. The second year of the project saw it tentacles reaching to other areas that needed attention of which Child Friendly City – Nilambur was an extension of this program. The first and foremost objective of this has to create an awareness of Children’s Rights among the objective of this has to create an awareness of Children’s Rights among the teachers, Parents and Children themselves. Several seminars, Workshops and consortium were organized for a detailed planning. Booklets with messages on Child Rights were developed in co-operation with UNICEF. These booklets were distributed to all the students of GMVHSS as well as 24 private schools which showed an eagerness to be a part of this program.
The next step was to form a body which would be by the students, of the students, for the students. The Govt.Manavedan Vocational Higher Secondary School,Nilambur teachers worked on the process and helped in forming a Students Parliament. On 14th November, 2012 which is celebrated as Children’s Day the Municipal Students Parliament was initiated at Govt. Manavedan Vocational Higher Secondary School, Nilambur. Nilambur witnessed magnificent Rally by the children. Mr.Aryadan Shoukath, Chairman Nilambur Municipality addresses the presidential speech where he explained the Parliamentary procedures and inspired the Children to stand up for their Rights, and to raise voice against any Violation of Child Rights. The highlight of the second year of implementation of the ‘Sadgamaya’ program was the establishment of a Municipal Students Parliament.
The third year of the program is progressing and Govt.Manavedan Vocational Higher Secondary School,Nilambur as well as the Nilambur Municipality with an able, energetic and enthusiastic leader Mr.Aryadan Shoukath, Chairman Nilambur Municipality has made a benchmark for other schools and districts of Kerala and all over the Nation to rise to. The government of Kerala State is working on spreading this program state wide. The third year has already witnessed the remarkable change in the students have come to like and feel the need for Yoga daily. The icing on the cake for the third year is an effect Parliament where students themselves formed the ruling and opposition. They discussed various issues but most important of them all was the passing of the ‘Child Marriage Prevention Bill’ by the Students Parliament, Nilambur. This made history for the student’s movement against atrocities on children.
Under this ‘Sadgamaya’ project, Student Counselors are appointed. Students are requested to meet with the counselors should they have any issues.
The ‘Sadgamaya’ project has been continuously comprehensively and effectively assessed by the concerned authorities. This training has made a world of difference in the Children’s attitude and their Parents are proud of the changes brought about in them. The Children feel more confident to face the World and are aware of their Rights as well as the Protection they can avail of given bodies appointed by the Municipality.
An effective implementation of this program promises a future generation who will be Confident, Intelligent and Independent in their approach to Life and Society.
